Building A Solar Sterilizer

Materials: 
  • Glass
    • 1 Meter X 1 Meter sheet of glass (thick, or double pane)
  • Lumber
    • 4-38mmX89mmX2440 
  • Plywood  
    • 1220mmX2440mm
  • Highly reflective material
    • 4 square meters
  • Highly insulating clay/ceramic material.
  • Nails
  • Hammer
  • 4 Hinges
  • 1 Lock

  1. Assemble a box using the plywood and Lumber. 
    1. Cut 2 pieces of the lumber to 1 meter in length and 2 pieces to 1.76m long. 
    2. Cut the Plywood to 1 meter by 1 meter. 
    3. Nail the plywood to the cut lumber so that the 2 1-meter by 1-meter pieces are parallel and the 1.76-meter pieces are parallel.
    4. Take an equal sized piece of plywood as the base of the box, attach this to the bottom of the box with two hinges on one edge. 
  2. Insulating
    1. Apply the clay-like material to the inside of the box. Create a thick layer of around 3 inches throughout the box and let dry.
    2. Install racks to hold equipment.
    3. Paint both inside and outside black.
  3. Create Window
    1. Cut a 20mm slit through the Lumber.
    2. Cut 2 pieces of the lumber to 1 meter in length and 2 pieces to 1.76m long. 
    3. Surround the glass with the wood to create a frame
    4. Connect the window to the box with 2 hinges on the same edge.
    5. Add lock to the connected box
  4. Reflective material
    1. Extend the reflective material out at a 45-degree angle from all sides of the window.
    2. There should be 4 rectangular sections coming out from the edges and 4 triangular sections out from the corners of the window.
  5.  Additions
    1. Add racks to the inside
    2. Add thermometer
    3. Add time to the outside
