Building A Solar Sterilizer

Materials: 
  • Glass
    • 1 Meter X 1 Meter sheet of glass (thick, or double pane)
  • Lumber
    • 4-38mmX89mmX2440 
  • Plywood  
    • 1220mmX2440mm
  • Highly reflective material
    • 4 square meters
  • Highly insulating clay/ceramic material.
  • Nails
  • Hammer
  • 4 Hinges
  • 1 Lock

  1. Assemble a box using the plywood and Lumber. 
    1. Cut 2 pieces of the lumber to 1 meter in length and 2 pieces to 1.76m long. 
    2. Cut the Plywood to 1 meter by 1 meter. 
    3. Nail the plywood to the cut lumber so that the 2 1-meter by 1-meter pieces are parallel and the 1.76-meter pieces are parallel.
    4. Take an equal sized piece of plywood as the base of the box, attach this to the bottom of the box with two hinges on one edge. 
  2. Insulating
    1. Apply the clay-like material to the inside of the box. Create a thick layer of around 3 inches throughout the box and let dry.
    2. Install racks to hold equipment.
    3. Paint both inside and outside black.
  3. Create Window
    1. Cut a 20mm slit through the Lumber.
    2. Cut 2 pieces of the lumber to 1 meter in length and 2 pieces to 1.76m long. 
    3. Surround the glass with the wood to create a frame
    4. Connect the window to the box with 2 hinges on the same edge.
    5. Add lock to the connected box
  4. Reflective material
    1. Extend the reflective material out at a 45-degree angle from all sides of the window.
    2. There should be 4 rectangular sections coming out from the edges and 4 triangular sections out from the corners of the window.
  5.  Additions
    1. Add racks to the inside
    2. Add thermometer
    3. Add time to the outside

Reflective Array - Week Six

During this week, we created the base of the reflective array for the sterilizer. We decided to use cardboard as the construction material for the array as it is low cost, easy to manipulate, and accessible. The reflective material has yet to be mounted to the cardboard, but the framework has been created. The base of the array consists of 8 pieces: 4 rectangles and 4 triangles. The bottom of which fit around the top of the box. These pieces will be 45 degrees from the ground. The array is broken into two halves that are tied together using string. We are currently working on a method of attaching the pieces to the body of the box so that they can be easily transported. The purpose of this array is to focus the necessary amount of light energy into the sterilizer. It stands at a 45-degree angle to aim the direct light perfectly downward. Materials - Week Two

This week the group discussed which materials we will use. Our biggest considerations were cost, availability, and practicality. These requirements must be met so that the design is achievable for both a small clinic and because the teams budget is very little. The Frame-  This outer wooden covering can really be made out of any type of lumber accessible. Drexel's Innovation Design Studio will supply all the lumber necessary for the Solar Sterilizer. In third world countries, wood unfinished wood is relatively cheap and not hard to find. Wood is a very appropriate material for the frame because it is sturdy and an insulator and will be safe to touch when the inside is hot. Insulation-  Insulation will help hold all as much of the heat in the oven as possible. Because this is powered solely by the sun it is going to require a lot of insulation to hold heat.
